Breathwork

Acessing Altered States of Healing

Breathwork is a powerful healing practice that uses conscious breathing techniques to activate the body’s natural ability to release stress, process emotions, and access expanded states of awareness. It works on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels, helping to clear stagnant energy, regulate the nervous system, and awaken a deep sense of presence and aliveness.

How Breathwork Works

Breathing is directly connected to our nervous system, emotions, and life force energy (prana, chi, or kundalini).

  • Shallow, unconscious breathing keeps the body in a state of tension and survival mode.

  • Deep, intentional breathing sends signals of safety, balance, and openness to the mind and body.

By changing our breath, we change our state of being. Breathwork can help release old trauma, reset the nervous system, and even induce ecstatic, altered states of consciousness.

Types of Breathwork Practices

1. Diaphragmatic (Belly) BreathingFor Relaxation & Nervous System Balance

How: Breathe deep into the belly, expanding on the inhale and softening on the exhale.
Benefits: Reduces stress, anxiety, and tension. Activates the parasympathetic (rest & digest) nervous system.

2. Circular or Conscious Connected BreathingFor Emotional Release & Energy Activation

How: Continuous, rhythmic breathing with no pauses between inhales and exhales.
Benefits: Releases stagnant emotions, trauma, and energetic blockages. Often used in holotropic or rebirthing breathwork.

3. Box BreathingFor Focus, Clarity & Nervous System Reset

How: Inhale for 4 seconds → Hold for 4 seconds → Exhale for 4 seconds → Hold for 4 seconds.
Benefits: Increases mental clarity, focus, and emotional stability. Used by Navy SEALs for stress resilience.

4. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana)For Balance & Mental Clarity

How: Breathe in through one nostril, hold, then exhale through the other nostril.
Benefits: Balances left & right brain hemispheres, enhances clarity, and calms anxiety.

5. Wim Hof BreathworkFor Energy, Strength & Immunity Boost

How: 30-40 deep inhales/exhales, then breath retention after exhaling.
Benefits: Increases oxygenation, boosts immune function, reduces inflammation, and enhances endurance.

6. Holotropic BreathworkFor Deep Healing & Altered States of Consciousness

How: Intense, rapid breathing over an extended period (30-60 minutes) guided by music.
Benefits: Induces trance-like states, emotional catharsis, and deep inner journeying.
